In September 2011, Other Crime was divided into 6 categories - Drugs, Public Disorder & Weapons (which was later split further and so is not displayed here), Criminal Damage & Arson (CD&A), Theft - Shoplifting, Theft-Other and Other.
From May 2013, the following changes were made to the crime categories:
I) The violent crime category was renamed "violence and sexual offences"
2) A new category for "bicycle theft" was created which previously fell within "other theft"
3) A new category for "theft from the person" was created which previously fell within "other theft"
4) Public disorder and weapons were then split into two new categories; "public order" and "possession of weapons"
5) Both "other firearms offences" and "other knives offences" which were in "other crime" were moved into "possession of weapons".

The Rural West area of Okehampton is a relatively large area consisting mainly of small villages and farmland stretching onto the northern edge of Dartmoor. The largest town on the Rural West patch is the market town of Hatherleigh.
Hatherleigh is the smallest town in Devon, it hosts various events throughout the year including an arts festival, an annual half marathon called the Ruby Run and a carnival featuring two flaming tar barrel runs. Hatherleigh market has weekly sales of sheep, cattle and poultry and is very popular with the local communities.
Okehampton Rural West is a safe place to live with very few serious incidents of crime occurring. We work alongside partner agencies to provide a high level of service to our residents. Our team work closely with the local primary schools and college to engage and educate children on various subjects such as internet safety, child sexual exploitation and road safety. We work together as one team to safeguard our communities and neighbourhoods.
The main problems are parking and anti-social behaviour.
