From May 2013, the following changes were made to the crime categories:
I) The violent crime category was renamed "violence and sexual offences"
2) A new category for "bicycle theft" was created which previously fell within "other theft"
3) A new category for "theft from the person" was created which previously fell within "other theft"
4) Public disorder and weapons were then split into two new categories; "public order" and "possession of weapons"
5) Both "other firearms offences" and "other knives offences" which were in "other crime" were moved into "possession of weapons".

Newcastle West Sector covers 6 Council Wards in the west of Newcastle, stretching from the Redheugh Bridge on the outskirts of the City Centre, west along the River Tyne to the boundary with Northumberland. Included in the sector is West Road Police Station, and a number of notable features, including Newcastle General Hospital, Newcastle College, the Metro Radio Arena, the bustling West Road retail area, and substantial green spaces in Newcastle Town Moor, Exhibition Park and Nuns’ Moor Park. There are 4 secondary schools in the area; Excelsior Academy, Sacred Heart RC High School, St Cuthbert’s Catholic High School and Walbottle Campus, together with the many primary schools which feed into them.
