Police Ranks – where do I start?

The Police.uk API provides spaces for the name, rank, email, phone and bio of each neighbourhood police team member. This includes police ranks and non-police ranks. Once again this appears to be free-form with police forces not provided with a guideline of values to enter.

Police.uk (and the police forces) must understand that in order for this data to be useful, it must be consistent. How can we mine this data otherwise? We would love to be able to instantly produce a report that shows the number of PCs to PCSOs (for example) but when there are 515 different entries for ‘rank’, what are we supposed to do?

Here are all examples of PCSO:

P.C.S.O, PSC0, PCSO (Safer School Officer), PCSO – Schools Officer, etc.

There can’t be more than a handful of ranks. I would recommend that ‘rank’ is changed to ‘title’, and that a new rank field created where only valid ranks are permitted.
